Public awareness programs: ICEB works round the clock promoting awareness about eye donation through media, talks, publicity materials, Hospital Cornea Program, and the National Donation Fortnight (EDF).

Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP)

For the purpose of increasing the donor pool, the ICEB initiated a unique program known as the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP) in 2003, whereby, trained Eye Donation Counsellors (EDCs) posted in multispeciality hospital and mortuary approach the family members of the deceased and motivate them to make an eye donation. Over the years, HCRP has evolved as effective modality to enhance eye donations. The ICEB has this program in place in some of the multispeciality hospital in the twin cities of Noida and Delhi.

Donor cornea recovery

The ICEB performs in situ corneal excision procedures (a process by which only the cornea is removed from a donors eye) and directly preserved in MK medium. Thus removal of whole eye ball is not required. This technique ensures eye donation without bleeding and cosmetic disfigurement.

Donor Cornea Evaluation

The harvested human donor corneas are subjected to evaluation at the ICEB by slit lamp biomicroscopy, in order to assess their suitability for transplantation. Corneas are then graded according to the evaluation criteria and labeled as "suitable" or "unsuitable" for corneal transplantation.

Serological screening of donor blood

The donor is screened for viral infections such as the HIV, Hepatitis B, and HCV by employing standard serological techniques. Any donor who tests further for any of above mentioned test are rendered unfit for transplantation.

Donor Cornea Preservation

At the ICEB the harvested donor corneas are preserved in MK medium until used for surgery. This medium renders the cornea viable for a period of 96 hours, during which time the cornea can be used for transplantation.

Donor Cornea Distribution

Donor corneas found suitable are distributed to corneal surgeons within and outside the ICEH Strictly on a first-come-first-served basis.
