Post Graduate Institute
A Post Graduate Institute has been established as part of the hospital, which
though functional needs further expansion and consolidation.
- In July 2000 the institute received accreditation to the National Board of
Examination for conducting DNB courses (3 year post-graduate course in
ophthalmology).
- The Institute is also conducting 1-2 months short term courses to train
ophthalmologists in modern technologies of cataract surgery, particularly
Phacoemulsification with IOL implantation.
- The institute has started 1 year Fellowship courses for ophthalmologists, (Post
D.O, MS & DNB Ophthalmology), who wish to upgrade their clinical and
surgical skills.
- Short term courses on contact lens, Glaucoma, Lasers in ophthalmology and
indirect ophthalmoscopy are being conducted regularly.
- A library with relevant books, journals, magazines, papers and network
facilities provides the students adequate reading material for information and
knowledge about their courses and training.
- The trainees also attend afternoon teaching schedules, Journal Clubs, case
discussions and CME’s held regularly for the Post Graduate students.
- The institute is also conducting 1 year course for ophthalmic nursing assistants
(ONA) for young graduates who wish to pursue their careers in the field of
nursing.
ICARE Research Centre
The ICARE Research Centre is still in its infancy. It was established with
the aim of promoting awareness of glaucoma in the community through
conducting free screening camps for early detection and treatment of glaucoma.
Presently there are two full time glaucoma consultants who run the glaucoma
clinics. The centre is equipped with a Haag Streit Slit Lamp with applanation
tonometer, 2 mirror and 3 mirror gonioscopes, 78D and 90D lenses and a
Humphrey Visual Field analyzer. It is also equipped with state-of-the-art
frequency doubling Yag and Argon Laser machines for the treatment of various
glaucomatous conditions.
Clinical research in glaucoma is going on at the base hospital, success rates in
the various surgical modalities of treatment in different types of glaucoma and
therapeutic trials on the latest drugs available in glaucoma management.
The centre also conducts short term glaucoma observership programmes to train
ophthalmologists in various examination techniques in glaucoma, as well as
medical and surgical management.
Future plans include upgradation of the existing equipment, acquisition of a
pachymeter, tonopen, non - contact tonometer, nerve fiber layer analyzer and a
Heidelberg Retinal Tomogram and develop rural and urban based programmes
for the early detection and prevention of glaucoma.
