| Public Awareness Programs |
| ICEB works round the clock promoting awareness about eye donation through media, talks, publicity materials, Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program, and through the National Eye Donation Fortnight (EDF). |
| Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight Program |
| For the purpose of spreading the awareness on eye donation, the World Sight Day and Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight Programs are regularly being held at our center annually. We have been getting support from luminaries like Dr. Yoganand Shastri (Hon. Health Minister), Mr. Ashok Pradhan (M.P.), Mr. Chauhan (D.M.) and Mr. Rathore (S.S.P.). |
| Hospital Cornea Retrieval Program (HCRP) |
| For the purpose of increasing the donor pool, the ICEB initiated a unique program HCRP. Trained Eye Donation Counsellors (EDCs) posted in multispeciality hospitals and mortuaries approach family members of the deceased and motivate them to make an eye donation. Over the years, HCRP has evolved as an effective modality to enhance eye donations. |
| Our success with eyes collection programme till 2010 |
| The ICARE Eye Bank was instrumental in procuring 700 donor eyes and restoring eyesight to 522 sightless people over the decade. |
| Donor Cornea Recovery |
| The ICEB performs in situ corneal excision procedures (a process by which only the cornea is removed from a donor’s eye). The cornea is directly preserved in MK medium. Removal of the whole eye ball is not required. This technique ensures eye donation without bleeding and cosmetic disfigurement. |
| Donor Cornea Evaluation |
| The harvested human donor corneas are subjected to evaluation at the ICEB by slit lamp biomicroscopy and specular microscopy. |
| Serological screening of donor blood |
| The donor is screened for viral infections such as the HIV, Hepatitis B, and HCV by employing standard serological techniques. Any donor who tests positive for any of above mentioned test is rendered unfit for transplantation. |
| Donor Cornea Preservation |
At the ICEB the harvested donor corneas are preserved in MK medium until used for surgery. This medium renders the cornea viable for a period of 96 hours, during which time the cornea can be used for transplantation.
| Donor Cornea Distribution |
| Donor corneas found suitable are distributed to corneal surgeons within and outside the ICEH strictly on a first-come-first-served basis. |
