1. What is an Eye Bank |
- An Eye Bank obtains, medically evaluates and distributes tissus for use in
Corneal transplantation, research and education. To ensure patient safety
the donated tissue and Donor's medical history are evaluated by the Eye
Bank in accordance with Eye Bank Association of India's strict medical
standards.
- Eyes can be donated within 6 hours of death. Inform Eye Bank immediately.
In case of death in non hospital setting, obtain a death certificate from
a registered medical practitioner and keep a copy for the Eye Bank team.
Keep ice bags/ moist cotton on the eyes. Keep head elevated. Keep the
surroundings cool.

2. On donating your eyes |
- Eye can be donated after death only.
- Persons of any age can donate eyes.
- Eye Donations is a simple process that takes 15-20 minutes only. Eye
donation being confidential, the identify and details of the Donor and
Recipients will not disclosed.
- The ICARE team can recover the eyes wherever the Donor is.
- Anyone over the age of 18 years can
pledge their eyes.
- Write to ICARE, NOIDA for a pledge card.
When you receive the card, fill up the necessary details and send it to
ICARE Eye Bank with your pasport size (small) photograph. On receiving
the pledge card, a Donor card is sent to the pledgee. You can also visit
us directly to receive a Donor card.
| 4. Always remember to carry the Donor card |
- Note next of Kin consent is essential
for Eye Donation, even if you have pledged your eyes.
- Discuss your wish to donate eyes to next
of kin. Their knowledge of you desire to be a Donor helps then to carry
out you wish.
| 5. What is Transplanted ? |
- The clear front part of the eye that covers the colored iris is called the
Cornea. If the Cornea is damaged it may become swollen or scarred. Cornea
transplant is a procedure which replaces a segment of the damaged Cornea
with healthy Donor Cornea. The whole eye ball is not transplanted.
- After donation, a Cornea is usually transplanted within three days with
the currently available storage medium.
| 6. Who benefits from Cornea transplant ? |

Those blind patients who have decreased vision due to a defective Cornea
can benefit from a Cornea transplant.
